Things I Don’t Need

to keep my schedule
I need to be ready to drop everything to keep God’s unexpected appointments.

to be in control
I need to fully rely on God, because He really is in control.

…to be organized
I need to find what is important to God and mold my life around that.

…to see the bigger picture
I need daily bread. I need to trust that what I have at the beginning of the day will be enough for the whole day.

…to make sure my efforts are always worth it
I need to give of my time, energy, and resources without expecting anything in return, trusting that God will use it and that will be more “worth it” than what I could do with it.

…to be treated fairly
I need to follow God who loves justice, and who will put all things to right in the end.

…to be anxious for the future
I need faith in God’s plan knowing He will care for me as He does the lilies and the sparrows.

…to be wise in my own eyes
I need wisdom from above in my use of money, in relationships, in time management, and that will not look like what the world values.

…to keep all the balls in the air
I need to let some balls drop because God has called me to other things.

…money and possessions
I need only what I can use for God’s glory.

…friends and family
I need Jesus, and I need to not make my life revolve around any person or group more than Him. That is idolatry. That is not loving them, but rather it is a complicated form of hate.

…stable circumstances
I need to stand firmly on the Rock of Ages.

…to be understood
I need to understand what God wants.

…to be happy
I need to find joy in God alone.

…serenity
I need peace from God that the world does not know about.

…more in my life
Sometimes I need less. More isn’t always better, sometimes more is just more.

…to increase and expand my horizons
He must increase. I need to decrease.

…to be heard
I need to listen.

…to figure it out
I need to follow.

…to be comforted and soothed
I need to see the harsh reality of my sin so that I can repent and be corrected.

…my leaders to see everything I see
I need to submit to God-ordained authority and gain a glimpse of what they see.

…to be “enough”
I need to be overflowing with what God fills me.

…to worry or be afraid
I need to have faith and trust in what God is doing.

…to keep up a good facade
I need to be changed from the inside toward the outside. I need to be filled with the Spirit who is sanctifying me, continuing a good work in me, so that my sanctification matches my justification and can’t help but show on the outside.

ANYTHING
My life is the Lord’s. He is all I need.

What else can you add to this list?

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace.
