My mother’s side of the family is Slavic. Consequently, the big family gatherings were filled with delicious and plentiful foods. One staple of the dessert table was Poppy Seed Bread. Now, the truly traditional pastry was a little different from what I’m used to. You can find a good recipe for that here. It is basically a rolled sweet bread with the poppy seed filling inside. Kind of like cinnamon rolls but baked all together and cut afterward. I’ve never seen my mother or my grandmother make the poppy seed filling from scratch. They always used the Solo Brand cans of filling. Grandma would always make one roll with poppy seed filling and another roll with almond paste filling. Both were yummy, but the poppy seed was the favorite! My mom used to make the dough from scratch, but then later she used her bread machine. When she gave me the Sweet Bread Recipe for the Bread Machine, I had thought it sounded easy to put together. And it was!
I also use this sweet bread recipe for cinnamon rolls, monkey bread, donuts, etc. Enjoy!
- 3/4 cup tap water
- 1 egg yolk
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 5 Tbsp. sugar
- 1 1/2 Tbsp. shortning/butter
- 1 1/2 Tbsp. dry milk
- 1 1/2 tsp. dry yeast
- 4 Tbsp butter
- 1 12.5 oz can Solo Brand Poppy Seed Filling
- Put all ingredients in the bread machine except the last two. Set it on “dough” setting and press “start.” When cycle is complete, roll out the dough into a rectangle shape as much as possible. Spread butter all over the surface. Then generously spread the filling all over leaving 1/2 inch space around the edges. (No one would complain if you opened a 2nd can of filling to add more!) Roll the dough lengthwise and pinch the seams closed. Place the roll onto a greased baking pan with the seams down. Let it rise in a warm place for at least 1/2 hour. Bake at 350 for 15-20 minutes. Do not over-bake as this recipe tends to become dry easily. Spread your favorite icing over the top or dust with powdered sugar. Delicious when warm or cool.
- Omit the last two ingredients to create a sweet bread dough good for cinnamon rolls, monkey bread, donuts, etc.
